Default Gullveig and the Norns?

I was reading Leaves of Yggdrasil by Freya Aswynn and she claims that the Norns were born through the death of Gullveig.

"I recall the first battle in the world.
There they stabbed Gullveig with spears,
and burned her in Har’s hall.
Thrice she was burned, thrice she was born.
It happened often, and yet she lives."

She suggests that the "thrice she was born" refers directly to the Norns and that through Gullveig's buring the Norns were born. I don't see this in that passage, is there any link that I am missing, because I don't see it anywhere that the Norns are linked with Gold Lust. *shrugs*

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Although I have not read the book, I have heard nothing but bad things about it. However, given the tidbits of info from it that I've heard, it seems like just another fluffy book flooding heathen concepts with all sorts of wiccan mumbojumbo.

Gullveig's rebirths do not mean the creation of the nornir. This was a case of the author mixing her personal beliefs with our mythology.

Thanks, I sooo couldn't find any proof anywhere for what she was saying.

So I should take what she says with a pinch of salt then?

Hmm, reccommend any good books?

I have still to read Teutonic religion and Teutonic Magic by Kveldulf Gundarsson. But I am working my way through other stuff as well as this lady. =)

Is there anywhere in the Lore that shows how they Norns came about, because my reading at the minute seems to show they are an inevitable part of life.

For all I know, she could be a very good feminist Wiccan author, but I would not trust her on the matters of the germanic religions.

As for good books, it depends on what you want. Are you more interested in lore or theology, or any specific topic? I will say that I don't really know any decent books on magic, as that is very much not my thing .

As for the origins of the norns, I'm not sure. There might be something in there, but I'm not too knowledgable yet. I'll tell you if I can find something though. I've always just lived with the simple "There here, and that's all that's important." outlook.

Lore and theology is what I'm interested in at the mo.

My current outlook on things is leaning towards heathenism, with a bit of fluff (mainly wiccanesque) still stuck to some of my practices. If that helps in recommending books.

Well you could start with the basics: the prose and poetic eddas and the havamal. They should all be easy to find online with a little googling. Beyond that, the folks at Odinist.com (a heathen forum) suggest:

Ooookay!

I have the poetic and prose eddas.

The havamal is here too... a few select verses are on my wall at home and two on my wall at school for my form group.

I have a few sagas (gotta love ebooks, when youre suffering the effects of toooo much money spending)

I also have Teutonic Religion and Teutonic Magic by Gundarsson

I shall work on getting the others too.

Thanks! I love books.

I have not read Freya Aswynn's book, but I believed that is just her interpretation.

I don't see any link between Gullveig and the Norns as well. If she is basing this solely on that Eddaic verse, then I would definitely say "not".

If Gullveig is linked to anyone, then she is most likely to be equated with the goddess Freyja, though that is also rather tenuous at best. Both are goddesses of magic, as indicated by Guillveig's transformation into Heid. And both goddesses who loves gold.

There may be a link between Freyja and the Norns, however. Freyja is the goddess who decided on victory in battle, so she is like a Norn. She was also given half of the braves who had fallen in battle, while Odin took the other half to Valhalla.
