Default Star Wars?!

After watching Revenge of the Sith, I realized how much the message meant to me... I used to laugh at the people who lived and breathed Star Wars but now... I don't know.

I don't know if this has been posted before, or whether I'm even in the right section, I dun care.

Question is: Is it really so out of the ordinary that some people consider Star Wars to be religion?

Since the philosophy behind the Force in Starwars is based in Taoism, and Buddhism, I see nothing wrong with finding the religious aspects in it. What I teach is very close to what Jedi's are, and while I don't call myself or my students Jedi, we are pretty close.

Define religion? For me... or at least what I was trying to say in that context is... something you live your life by, something you believe in. A code.

I just don't realize why I see people all around scoffing at the thought of taking it seriously.

I think that someone of pretty much any religious persuasion can relate Star Wars to their belief system somehow. I know I can see some interesting parallels to LDS thought. I do agree, however, that it fits with less strethcing into beliefs such as Taoism and Buddhism.

Hmm. Well, a lot of people - in my experience, usually Christians - see religion or experience religion as very separate from daily life. They therefore fail to see how something as 'mundane' as a scifi movie can possibly have religion in it. They don't understand that anything can be - and usually is - religious.

I used to laugh at people who followed the Jedi religion, then I read the Jedi Book, found that Jedis have roots in more than George Lucas' imagination, and now I realize it to be a real religion.
To be honest, I have done some of the Force techniques in the Jedi Book before I even knew they acknowlegded any mystical force abilities.

I've had to read John D. Caputo: On religion, for Religious studies. Two things made me unusually perplexed.

1) The author wishes that the Devil take me, and any other person not loving the author's God.

2) Professor Caputo seems to think that there are some religious aspects to be found in "Star Wars".

1) is obviously rather prosecutable hate speech. I'm going to deal with that elsewhere.

2) made me believe that Star Wars is not only a ridiculously expensive anti-missile programme but a movie as well. Could anyone please explain to me what connection there is between space creatures and religion, or if I've got it all wrong.

I agree that star wars in itself is not, and should not be a religion. But you can't deny the connections between "The Force" and "Jedi" to Taoist and Buddhist thought.
