so, let's all have a chat about Runes!
does anyone here use Runes? does anyone here have any knowledge of Runes? i'm learning a bit about Runes at a 1 hour weekly seminar thing a Heathen friend of mine from the Pagan Society at my university is running, but before this i have never studied them or looked at them.

Both Gentoo and I have worked with them. Gentoo more so than I. (She even did a seminar on them in college.
)I certainly find them useful in organizing my thoughts into useful patterns. I prefer them in some ways to Tarot, as they are simpler and more open to interpretation. There's also something more delightfully primitive in working with them.

GC's right... I was cornered into doing a workshop on them when we were in college. A friend of mine (who kinda acted as my teacher) introduced them to me and I picked them up in no time. Dare I say, but I'm good with them, or rather, they're good with me. My 'favorite' instance was I was able to foretell my friend's cancer months before she was diagnosed. I'm a little out of practice, people usually want Tarot readings but I do give them a choice.
Good luck with your seminar!

I use runes for writing all the time (it's fun. I'll even take all my class notes in elder futhark.) As for using them for divination or whatever, I never even gave it any thought. Not really my thing.

My Irish Catholic Grandmother gave me my first set of Runes when I was 14 yrs old, and I still think it was a conspiracy to get me on the path of the mystic
![]() I too like their simplicity---you just need 3 runes for the basic reading. The Futhark is what most people use but you can make your own rune system up and it works well, just be sure to clearly identify what each rune stands for in your mind, or you can just make up symbols and come up with meanings later---based on what they remind you of (like the old ink blot game) The last 20 years or so I have been working on creating an advanced magick alphabet called "The Dreamtongue" with a good friend of mine, and we are very close to finishing a useable system. Its based on a trinary system (like the I Ching but with 3 kinds of lines rather than just two), and the dreamtongue glyphs are artistic representations of those trinary sigils. It would have been done a long time ago, but I saw the connection with quantum mechanics (trinary being the in-between state of manifest and non-manifest), so its taken longer to give the system a full treatment and make it look really pretty, too. |

I'm curious, why do people use the futhark? Why not any other system. After all, the futhark is just an alphabet, but how often do you hear of people using the latin alphabet or Cyrillic or Hangul or any other writing system?
