A friendler name?
Just a bit about me before I ask this.
I used to date a girl who was a witch a long time ago I had never heard the word Wiccan before that not after that untill some years later. I learned alot from her about witchcraft. It wasn't untill five years ago I heard the term Wicca or Wiccan, I have to admit I thought that someone had came up with that has a friendler was to say Witch. My question is does the term Wiccan sound more friendler then Witch? I know there's a HUGE difference in the meaning of each. I have to admit I used to call myself Wiccan so I would not frighten people they seem to deal with that better then hearing the word witch.

I think because "witch" already has a negative stigma to it, I'm sure you've noticed at Halloween just what "witches" look like. Not to mention in the Bible: Though shalt not suffer a witch to live, as it's popularly translated. And in history too, I'm reminded of Salem, Mass., were these witches like how we use the term now? Of course not, but I think that's where it comes from. It takes a lot of work to reclaim a word that still has such powerful negative (or comical, in terms of the Halloween "witches").

One must also note that not all Witches or people that call themselves Witches are Wiccan. Yes most Wiccans will call them self a Witch, but not all Witches will call them self a Wiccan.

It could be a friendlyer name. I think it's being thought of as such but I'm one of the few who's not intrested in the reclaiming of the word witch. Common sterotype and all that, the word witch still draws up some negative images that are not easily traded to a different word. Just what would I call a person who exbisits such actions and attidudes IRL?
I'd rather have a clean plate to work with.

i can see a difference in people's perceptions of the word witch compared to the word wiccan, and yes wiccan is a friendlier name, despite the differences between witches and wiccans.
i don't use the word wiccan to describe myself, and i don't use the word witch to describe myself, because neither of these on their own sum up what i am. i am a syncretic ceremonialist - which is even friendlier on first glance that wiccan is, because most will not understand it and not make a connection to Paganism
