Default Questions about Native American Spirituality

Hi everyone. I have a few questions. Are Native American religions based upon which tribe one comes from or is a member of? Is there a general Native American religion in which one does not have to be a member of a tribe? Are non-Native Americans allowed to participate in Native American religion/spirituality? Thank you for your time.

Although I can't claim to speak with any knowledge about the tribal situations, there are many Native Americans that are welcoming and accepting of all peoples participating in their religion, no matter what their ethnic heritage. I've heard of a few 'fundamentalists', too, those that claim that this will only lead to more pain and suffering for the First Nations, but most of the people I've met who have been willing to pass on their knowledge have been very kind. And I suppose it would depend on with whom you are speaking with whether they said a person of another heritage would be allowed to participate in their spirituality, and even then, to what extent. I've been welcomed in a sweat lodge (which is a good thing, since I helped make the thing!) and drumming circles, and still I know that there are things that would be too sacred for me to be a part of. Whether that would be because of my non-native heritage, or because of my not being of a certain tribe, I'm not sure... I hope this helps! I'm sure some more knowledgeable people will be back to offer their insights soon!

Each tribe has its own tradtions and specific set of beliefs. Most people I've talked to are all for sharing of spirituality. There are many that are 'pan-indian' in thier beliefs and have no specific tribal affiliation. Native Sprituality is not about skin color, all who have a 'native soul' are welcome, though there are those who want to keep 'outsiders' outside.

Feathers- many rituals and ceremonys are for those who have a certen ammount of learning and dedication to Native Spirituality. I'm shure you were not left out in malice but simply because it wasn't a ceremony where you would have a place. Many ceremonies are highly personal to those who participate (as you know from the sweat lodge) and need special preperation. Some are simply for men or women only.

hope this helps.

Are there any basic beliefs that are common among Native American spiritual systems?

Most general ideas are common to all native beliefs, its the details that we vary on.
The idea that everything in creation is equil and has a 'spirit' and that sprits can influence your life for both good and ill. There are other things like the power of prayer, rituals, song and dance. The personal relationship you have with creator and the spirits around you.
We share the idea that life is sacrid and every moment is prayer. When you eat you give thanks, when you see something like a sunset or a bird flying by you give thanks.
Hope this helps.
