This guy is an amazing flute player, hoop dancer, and story teller. To top it off, he spent the night at my house once when I was really young.

I love Walela, although their music is not "traditional" like the flute-players mentioned in this thread. I guess you would call it contemporary Native American music. But some of their songs are partly in Cherokee, and all of the songs send a beautiful message. The womean in the band, which includes Rita Coolidge, are truly gifted singers.
I like Ulali, too. My favorite song is heartbeat drums, which you can listen to here: http://www.realmenlightmentpsp.org/DanceOfSpirits.html Though these women do not sing in Cherokee, I can sing along with them much better than with Walela. The Feather River Singers are a lesser-known group of predominantly Cherokee women. They sing traditional powow music along with drums, nature sounds, etc. I would love to learn to dance to some of their songs. Hope this helps, Native American music is some of the most beautiful!

Look up Earthsong on iTunes of some similar site. You might like them. I was sampling a CD called "Native American Chants and Dances"

I'm a big fan of Joanne Shenandoah. Look for "Watch Me Through the Night" from the album Eagle Cries.
What a voice.... *melts*

Robert Mirabal is an aptly described Native American "renaissance man." I highly recommend his music. "Music From A Painted Cave" is by far one of my all-time favorite albums.
I also recommend going to a pow-wow near you and hearing the drum groups that play there. Sometimes they have CDs or the vendors will have CDs of various Native American music. You'll also get to know many Native Americans in your area and learn a lot of the culture and spirit that goes into the music. Most of it has a lots of tradition, a wealth of history and fascinating stories that go with it. |

If you are interested in powwow music, like srturtle mentioned, I like Bear Creek, Battle River, Star Blanket Jrs., and Young Gray Horse.
