sorry used "dude" in a general sence, not a gender specific.

all the info is out there and in major media... hard to hide a senitor...
Granted we don't go around wearing signs... Ben Nighthorse Cambell doesn't present himself as the Indian senitor from Colorado... just the representivie from Colorado.

Its my opinion that people just don't notice.. perhaps they expect us to still be wearing buckskin and feathers out in the "real world" so they just don't notice us in "normal" cloths.

I find most people expect to see Disneys Pochahantas, or some other overly romantacized image and not real looking people.

Here in Canada , there are advantages , and disadvantages to living on a reservation . I have one friend , whose father runs a rather large logging company based on a reserve . There are tax breaks doing so , however , one can't personally own the land on a reserve , so they are limited to any choices they make { new building and the like have to be approved by the Band ** , and it is harder to get a bank to back you .

There are other pros and cons too , but I'm not sure what they all are .

Reservations are an silly concept in my opinion . Land that by law , belongs to people , who aren't allowed to own it , only as a group . In my experience , that is what causes many to leave . But I am sure there are other reasons . And of course , some return .

BTW I also have a young friend , who I am quite proud of , that has a couple of months of internship left at Dalhousie before she becomes a gynecologist . Her husband is also a doctor , an ER specialist . She is a full status Chilcotin , and he a Mi'kmaq . { I know I have told of them before , but as I said I am quite proud of her ** .

Default indian "costume"

Help, My daughter has a school assignment (8th grade) to present a speech on Pocahantas and is to "dress up" as her subject. I'm sure the school is expecting a "Disneyesque" look but I'd like to be more realistic. I was trying to reseach Pocahantas and found this site. Let it be known I am a technology idiot and don't understand how this all works and what all the symbols are for. Can anyone give me some suggestions. Might Phocahantas have dressed like the English colonists she lived among? Where might I find an image of an accurate appropriate "costume" would look like?

I don't know how authentic is it, but this might help: Four Faces of Pocahontas

btw, are you in Virigina? If so, you could visit the Virginia Historical Society

here is a good start on learning about the Powhatan nation.

Naturally she would have dressed like a European when in Europe.

Painted Wolf, some years ago I read Hanta Yo by Ruth Beebe Hill. Have you ever read that book? If so, I would much appreciate your telling me what you think of it.
