Oh, don't get me wrong David, Nessum Dorma was my top male vocal favorite prior to hearing Domingo's song given in the OP. Both are a wonder, imho. To be fair, I'd love to hear Pavoratti's version of the song for comparrison. In a "sing off" I would probably bow to Luciano... just a suspicion.

Considering the Soul Lady herself had mere minutes to prepare her rendition is marvellous.

I agree, she is wonderful in what she does. I don't think it was fair of me to compare her to Pavarotti anyway, he was very large and spent his life developing those huge lungs of his. Another great male singer is Jussi Björling, but his recordings are all very grainy having been made in the 50s. He is interesting because he is one of the few very successful operatic singers to not be Italian! I can't send a link yet but type this in on youtube and enjoy!

This gave me a funny thought--Pavorotti singing "Respect" or "Chain of Fools." What do you think, good idea, or bad?

I've seen Pavarotti trying to sing non-operatic songs before, oh gosh. He did "Too Much Love Will Kill You" with Brian May and I think my face is still wrinkled from cringing so much.

Placido Domingo is really tops when it comes to opera, but I really like Hansi Kursch of Blind Guardian. Very powerful voice with a nice range, and metal!

I think I saw that, too. Or another pop song he tried to sing but to give the man some credit it was during his last years performing. I imagine trying to transition from operatic to other vocal styles is somewhat difficult. I like Pavarotti but do not care to hear him singing anything other than opera.

Outside of opera I think Mike Patton has a great voice. There are so many great singers it's too difficult to name one the best. Most that I like are from the past. Steve Walsh, Marvin Gaye, etc.

Sure he's a good tenor, but do you really think he is the greatest opera singer of all time? Pavarotti is the best in terms of voice, that's undisputed, but he was a brutish character actor and struggled in certain roles. It's also argued that Domingo sings in the wrong range, he'd do much better as a bass. I suggest listening to Jussi Biörling to hear how a tenor should sound. I'd also argue that Carreras sounds better than Domingo and acts better too. But that's all just my opinion. =P
