I heard that Marilyn Manson was slated for the Wonka role. Guess that didn't pan out. Last edited by carrdero; 12-10-2004 at 11:47 PM. |

Did anyone Read the book? Apparently there was more to it, like a glass elevator at the end. I think it went up in to the sky.

Charmless, with way too much information. Johnny Depp, who has the ability to act his way out of a wet paper bag actually plays a wet paper bag in this uninspired, rendition of Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
WHAT’S NEW We are introduced to Willy Wonka’s childhood with his father played appropriately by Christopher Lee. Unfortunately these series of interruptive flashbacks are misplaced and do nothing to add to the story or flesh out the blandness of Johnny Depp’s performance. A few of the parents, not seen in Mel Stuart’s/Gene Wilder version, or introduced. For example instead of Mike TeeVee’s mother going through the tour the father does. Instead of Violet’s father we are introduced to Violet’s mother. We also find out that Charlie has a father. WHAT’S HOT Danny Elfman’s Oompa Loompa song’s. Strong, memorable and enjoyable and he used the Oompa’s lyrics from the book and added a twisted modern melody that upstages Wonka himself. The sets are inventive and stylish and there is an updated look to most of the different rooms without an excessive amount of CG. WHAT’S NOT The movie is dark but this is due to the lighting and not due to the material. The misbehaving children are shown exiting the factory each with their own fates evident. This I believe is a mistake because it was better left not seeing how they turned out if they ever turned out at all. This is a decision I believe Tim Burton made himself to ease the concern of movie going children. OVERALL: I cannot figure why this movie was remade. I thought that everything that had to be expressed was handled eloquently in the 1971 version and besides our generation was not finished with this version to require another one. Tim Burton’s version wasn’t fun or funny but mostly it wasn’t entertaining. I wanted to think that my opinion was tainted from growing up with the original Willy Wonka but to do that would deny the wonderful performances that everyone applied to this 1971 movie and I will not do that. Anyone thinking of venturing out (even if your curiosity gets the best of you), save your money, rent the original and be prepared to experience pure imagination from the one and only Candy Man, Gene Wilder. |

His father was in the original book by Roald Dahl, working at a toothpaste factory. Also in the book, when they were in the Wonkavator, they described flying over the children that were exiting the factory: Something else that is more accurate than the Gene Wilder version. I, for one, am glad that they made it more true to the book, though I agree that the flashbacks were a bit much.
...of course he had a father. In the 1971 version, they were too busy having Grandpa Joe miraculously jump out of bed perfectly healthy to reap rewards that he didn't deserve. I bet no one was thinking "He can't help support the family along with Charlie" when he was happily clicking his heels.

I saw it yesterday, and I think it was fantastic!! I feel it was different than the original, so they can't be compared too much. Johnny Depp did very well as Wonka, and the rest was fantastic. I have nothing bad to say about it except the flashbacks were a bit much. But still, I loved it. Sure, it's not the original, but it doesn't have to be!! They can co-exist as two entirely different movies in my opinion.

I absolutely loved it. It had me giggling almost the entire time (mostly when the Oompa Loompas sang). I adore how they did the Oompa Loompas this time... the whole thing was just charming. I honestly never go to see a movie again, but this is one I'm going to take people to see.

I hated Grandpa Joe...lazy old coot couldn't get out of bed to do anything because he was too sick to do anything but take Charlie's paper round money to buy tobacco, but give him the chance to tour a chocolate factory and he's dancing all over the place like a 20 year old on viagra. I really wanted to ***** slap that old man...gave grandpa's a bad name, he did.![]()
