Jim Phelps was one of the most beloved assigners of impossible missions of old; did he really deserve to be turned into a villian in the first "Mission Impossible" (revisionist) movie?

I didn't even know that happened. I never watch Tom Cruise movies unless somebody brings the DVD over to my house.
That sucks, though. They shouldn't have done that. He didn't really assign the missions, though, did he?

Well, now, that's a technical question, and a good one. He was in charge of a group, much the way Ethan was in the movies, and assumed a role of leadership amongst the team he assembled.

It should be noted that one of his subordinates went on to take leadership of Moon Base Alpha when it blasted out into space, so he must have passed on some pretty significant leadership skills along the way.
(i.e. Rolly was a master of disguise and a very clever fellow. He could easily have posed as Commander Koenig... and brought his wife along with him.)
