Another great movie with an A-List cast of Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Its the femal equivalent to Dead Poets Soceity. Its about how Kathrine watts (Julia) is a recent graduate from UCLA and goes to teach Art History to girls at Wellsely in Massachusessets, an all female college in the 1950s. She wants them to recieve a higher education, and put off marriage and become something. Not a surprising role for Julia, but the movie all together is very balanced. With a tad bit of humor and the right spots of Drama, Gerani1248 gives this movie a 8/10

BEING THERE
DVD/ Color/ 130 Mins./PG/ 1979 A Hal Ashby Film Peter Sellers Shirly MacLaine Melvyn Douglas (1979 Best Supporting Actor Award) Jack Warden Being There is a story of chance. Chance Gardiner. Chance Gardiner (Peter Sellers) is an autistic gardener in his late fifties who usually finds himself in one awkward situation after another. Chance cannot read, cannot write, educates himself with children’s programming yet always seems to put the people around him at ease and astound everybody with his profundity at the same time. Shirley MacLaine plays the wife of a financially successful tycoon who is dying and manages to bump into Chance (literally) by mistake. Who is Chance Gardiner? That is what everyone in this brilliant film wants to know. This is the last film that Peter Sellers starred in before his death and he plays it straight as an arrow. With a combination of a gardener he knew in real life and his childhood comedian hero Stan Laurel, Sellers plays a role that is uniquely his own. Unforgettable yet insipid. He is a simple character surrounded by chaos but seems to be calm and passive around his stormy surroundings. If you appreciate this movie for anything it will be for Sellers performance. Other movies that this film may or may not have inspired that you may enjoy: Rain Man, Forest Gump |
