Ward Boundaries

You know, that's really funny. I think we're all kind of the same way about that. When I'm away from Salt Lake (I mean in some part of the country or world where there aren't a lot of LDS people), I'm always looking for "clues" that a person might be LDS. If the clue is really obvious, like a CTR ring, I almost always say something to the person. My wife's family likes to play "spot the Mormons" when they go to Disneyland We tried it at Disney World - but there just weren't as many of them.

I never really pay much attention to it. Here there are a lot of people who "look" Mormon - but most of them are Baptist.

I could easily walk around the perimeter of my ward. Those of you who live in areas whether half your neighbors aren't LDS, how big (geographically speaking) are your ward boundaries. How close does your nearest LDS neighbor live? What's it like not running into someone from your ward every time you go to the grocery store or out for fast food?

I've spent a lot of years in both environments. My ward now is about a 10 X 20 mile rectangle and includes several towns. There are 4 or 5 LDS in our High School. I miss some things about the last ward I had in Utah. We became very close friends with ward members there, since we not only saw each other at church, but also knew each other as neighbors.

We do that too! There definately is an "aura". Sometimes when we travel, I'll wear my BYU shirt, so that others will spot me. We hooked up with a group of LDS from another state on a cruise, and spent the week with them. It was so fun. We always have a instant connection, like we've known them for years.

One caution: ladies--make sure we aren't tagged as LDS because of frumpy clothes. We do tend to dress that way sometimes.

I wear my U of U shirt and I get spotted by our brothers and sisters in the world 'hood. People are nice about it and act as if I am one of the many. They ask if I like my coffee cold. I tell them Coke please

When I see someone with a U. of U. shirt, I assume they wore it to pick a fight with me.

My ward is pretty big for Utah since it's a singles ward. I know there are a couple ward members who live in my apartment complex, but I don't know any of them.

Man, Katzpur, your ward is huge! I go to church at my stake center and it's quicker to walk than to take a car. I am closest to the building in the whole ward, but the building isn't even in our ward boundaries. It's a three minute walk away.

My home teacher lives in my apartment building. My wife's visiting teacher lives about twenty yards away. Her previous home teacher lived in the apartment right next to ours — just through the wall.

When I was in high school, my church building was a 15-min drive away on a 45-mph road. When my wife was in high school, she went to church two cities away. After I was in high school, I moved to northern California and my stake was colossal. It took two hours to drive to my stake president's house for my mission interview, and it was in the next county over. (And you Easterners, remember that our counties out here are the size of some of your states! My county was a bit smaller than Connecticut and his county was a bit bigger than Delaware, and all of both counties were in our stake.)

Having tried both, I kind of prefer the bigger units. But I also really like the advantages of these smaller units here in urban Utah. I'm glad I've gotten to enjoy both.
