This news article from the Deseret News I find informative on erronous reporting.

I suppose if the FLDS believe the Book of Mormon is scripture from God, then they could be classified as Mormons (a nickname the LDS did NOT give themselves). Just as all followers of Christ are Christian.
But it makes it really confusing. Do the FLDS still believe in the truth of the BoM? I think so . . . |

I think the "Mormon" label should be for anyone who believes in the Book of MORMON. Just call the FLDS "Oldschool Mormons". There problem solved.

Do they call themselves "Mormons"?

Good question, I never thought of that. I'd assume they do though.

If they do . . . well . . . then they're Mormons, aren't they?

I think the main issue comes down to the fact that when every day people here "Mormon" they think of us, Latter Day Saints, the Church that is headquartered in Salt Lake City Utah. So it should come as no surprise that when the media begins talking about a polygamous "Mormon" group, we might have a problem with that because most people are going to think it is us, not some small fundamentalist group in Texas. This exact scenario occurred with my fiance's dad, he saw a news special on a polygamous "Mormon" group and thought that they were talking about us. He even tried to argue, when we told him that it was a splinter group, that they really were LDS because the program used the term "Mormon". We finally got through though. That is why the term "Mormon" should really only apply to LDS, to prevent this kind of confusion and frustration.
