The second prophecy is from Section 130 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Here Joseph Smith prophesied:
"When the Savior shall appear we shall see him as he is. We shall see that he is a man like ourselves... And a white stone is given to each of those who come into the celestial kingdom, thereon is a new name written, which no man knoweth save he that receiveth it. The new name is the key word. I prophesy, in the name of the Lord God, that the commencement of the difficulties which will cause much bloodshed previous to the coming of the Son of Man will be in South Carolina. It may probably arise through the slave question. This a voice declared to me, while I was praying earnestly on the subject, December 25th, 1832. I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man when I heard a voice repeat the following: Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter... The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit..."-Source:http://www.bci.org/prophecy-fulfilled/mormon.htm

that wasn't a prophecy of the second coming of Christ... as you will notice, it is God telling Joseph to quit asking about it. It says IF you live to be 85 which he didn't, and it also says, "therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter... " meaning, quit asking.
I could not give you a number of Joseph Smiths prophecies. But everything is published there in the Doctrine and Covenants that is considered scripture from Joseph's time. I am not sure what you mean by "did many miss the 2nd coming of Christ" Mormons did not predict when the second coming would be and I do not know about other churches.

This is not a Bahai forum so I will keep this short. Bahai's believe that Bahaullah is the 2nd Coming of Christ which would line up perfectly with this Joseph Smith prophecy. If God was telling Joseph Smith that Christ would return before he was 85, as it sounds like to me, that would fall in line with the Bahai belief that He is indeed the 2nd Coming. So this was not a prophecy concerning the return of Christ?

No, LDS do not view this as a prophecy of the second coming. Joseph Smith had been asking repeatedly about when the second coming would occur and that was the answer he got. It was telling him not to worry about it anymore, and as we know now, it is because Joseph Smith would be killed long before the second coming ever happened as we do not believe the second coming has occured yet. I am not familiar with your belief that the second coming has already happened. You believe that Jesus was reincarnated as the Bahaullah? Joseph Smith taught that reincarnation does not happen so that may cause some problem for using Joseph's words as evidence of the Bahaullah.

Unity Now 101, this is a common misconception that this statement refers to the second coming of Jesus Christ. The Lord, I believe, was trying to convey to Joseph Smith, that if he were to live and not die a martyr by the hands of evil men, he would live to the age of 85, at which time he would see the Lord face to face at the time of his death. Not while in the body, as would be at the Lord's second coming, but after his death. The Lord was only stating that Joseph Smith would die at the age of 85, if he were to live out his life, which of course did not happen.. This is the answer that I feel the Lord was trying to convey to Joseph Smith.... Last edited by FFH; 01-29-2007 at 02:08 AM. |

By the way - they cut out the end of the thought. I've added it back in. http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/130 Verses 14-17

It would be better addressed somewhere like General Religious Debates or Comparative Religion. This is a place for members of LDS to fellowship, and for non-LDS to ask respectful questions. It's not a place for us to explain our beliefs. I can move the thread to another forum, if that will work better for you. Just PM me and let me know. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, Sharon |
