Default Question about the eternal nature of gender

I was thinking today about the Proclamation and the part that says - "Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose."

My question is what about hermaphrodites? These people are born with both male and female anatomy. What if the parents choose to have the child be a female when the spirit inside is male? Does the LDS church have anything to say about such a situation?

Thanks!

That's a tough one. And something I've definitely wondered about. There is some room for improvement with the way the church handles gender issues right now imo. I guess the burden is on us to do a better job of understanding, teaching, and just talking about issues like gender, love, marriage, sexuality etc.

I took a biology class at BYU and this question came up. The professor said to trust in the Lord and everything will work out - maybe not here on earth, but in the next life.

So, what. Sometimes it's the best answer. We don't have the spiritual answers regarding this particular topic so we do the best we can and God will sort it out. Personally, I believe the Church should let such people identify how they will.

Out of curiosity:

May I ask about the LDS opinion on transsexuals, and transsexual operations such as male to female and female to male? What is the religious (or social, if no religious available) opinion on them?

I think that ties in with this thread.
