He's Crypty the Cryptosporidium, mascot of Blakely, GA's "Cryptosporidium Daze" festival, according to the article in the Onion.

My original avatar was a yeastie... a Brettanomyces lambicus (which can ruin wine, but makes certain Belgian beers wonderful). For Hallowe'en, I decided that my Brettanomyces would dress up as a Cryptosporidium, and it kinda stuck.
