Default the prophet

i understand the pharisees in the time of jesus and john were waiting for 3 prophecies to be fulfilled concerning the coming of prophets (according to the gospels): elijah, the messiah, and the prophet.
1. do you accept john as elijah? if not, are you still waiting for elijah?
2. are you still waiting for "the prophet like unto moses"?

peace upon peace be upon you

1. Who did John say he was? In John 1:21 they asked him if he was Elijah and he responds...

John 1:21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

This causes a bit of a problem because Jesus himself claimed John was Elijah in Matthew 11:11-14....
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

It's also important to examine the prophecy that says Elijah would come, when and why.

Malachi 3:23-24
23. Lo, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord,

24. that he may turn the heart of the fathers back through the children, and the heart of the children back through their fathers-lest I come and smite the earth with utter destruction.

Elijah will come before the Day of the Lord. Has the Day of the Lord happened yet? Obviously not and it doesn't stand to reason that Hashem would send Elijah over 2,000 years before the Day of the Lord does it? It says that Elijah will turn the hearts of the children to their fathers and the hearts of the father to his children. Has this happened yet? Again, obviously not.

2. This question is a bit misplaced because the coming prophet that will be likened unto Moses will be what we refer to as the Messiah. He has yet to come so the world waits his coming.

those things may be obvious to you, but there is no need to take a negative tone with me and ask rhetorical questions of that nature. i see things differently, but i only came to the judaism section to ask questions to better understand jewish beliefs.
i was unaware that jews considered the messiah and the prophet like unto moses to be the same physical person. sorry for my ignorance and i will no longer ask questions about jewish beliefs in this forum as it seems to be inapropriate to ask questions in the judaism section.

Oh I wasn't trying to be negative to you. I was just presenting my point of view based on what I have learned and studied from Jewish sources. In fact I am not a Jew but I do study Judaism. This is exactly the place to ask questions about Judaism. By seeing you have 12 posts all I can tell ya is you get to knowing who to ignore and who is willing to share. The Jewish section here is so dried up and deader than a door nail. If you ever have questions and don't feel comfortable asking them here feel free to send me a private message.

cool. my apologies. i sensed a negative tone, probably because of the other post which was clearly negative and i was on the defensive. haha, i should know better . maybe i will just learn to ignore the ones who seem to want to be insulting for no reason related to me. i recently joined the forum here, it is a pleasure to "meet" you.
thanks for sharing your knowledge.
i have only studied the main religious books of different religoins, i have not discussed anything with any practicing jews, so i do not know their modern beliefs, just my understanding of the tanakh.

Judaism is very rich in tradition and there are many differing sects that have different levels of theology. But again I am not a Jew. I follow only the part of Torah and the Law that applies to all of mankind.

You will learn a great deal here about other religions and most everyone is very open and helpful. Welcome to the board.
