Question: Islam and summer

Hi all. Okay so this past weekend I was visiting with family and me and my family and cousin's and their parents went to this water park this weekend. It was really fun and I had a good time. While I was there I got to thinking: what would a Muslim do in that situation? Do you guys go swimming and have fun at the beach and water parks like everyone else? Sorry if this seems rude or patronizing but I'm just curious.

there are special beaches only for women. Muslim women go swimming like everyone else in those private areas. men too.

there are some Muslims who do not mind swimming in public.

there are some Muslims who wear weird suits to swim in public.

it is not rude asking about it. here is one example; this is called burkini.

women i know usually rent a yacht and sail. they go to some bays and swim with ordinary swimming suits.

Ah. Thanks for the answer. What about wearing shorts and a tanktop or tshirt? I just added the part about being rude etc just in case.

shorts, tshirt, bikinis...it is ok for women to wear those if they were in separated area. they can wear anything they like around their family too. there should not be unrelated males. this is the right thing to do for a Muslim lady.

there are many resorts, hotels with swimming pool, spa, sauna only for women. you go sauna with a towel only. when women were alone together they feel comfortable. no men staring or disturbing.

where i am now, people go swimming together, men women together. they are Muslims but they are not following orders. among them, there are women who wear hasema to swim. no Muslim woman who's following commands of God would wear short and tshirt among unrelated men. but as i tried to point out, there are many variations. there are many different kinds of people. they are all Muslims at different levels of same belief.

Ah. So it just more so depends on where you are in your Muslim life? I was also thinking earlier how interesting it was I happened to think of that the day I was at this water park. I hadn't thought about anything religious since I was last here I think. What do you mean though by "among"? Do you mean other people in the park in general or the people you are directly with or the person who is sitting in front of you who is a guy and not a part of your family?

i meant other people, both male and female. the reason why she wears hasema is men. if swimming pool was isolated for women or if it was private property, she would not need to wear it. she would probably wear ordinary swimming suit.

yes, it is about being related with a man or not. a woman does not need to cover her hair at home for example. she can wear shorts, pants...etc. her father, her brother or any related or unrelated boy who does not have awareness of sexuality yet, would not be reason for her to cover. at home muslim women do not really look different from any other non muslim women. not all of them but being comfortable around your family is not considered as a sin.

Ah right. I understand now. I was just thinking earlier: what about with a job if you had to wear a specific uniform? For example I want to work for the local police dept as a det of homicide. Basically you just wear a nice pant suit (think Hillary Clinton and other female politicians).

i don't know. there are women who's having difficulties because of similar issues. in my country today (Turkey), they would not let girls who cover their hair get into schools. if they want to study, they have to uncover their hair. i think that is very unfair. but it is happening.

Ah. That stinks. What if you live in a secular country? Like the US, Canada, France, etc?
