islamist countries like pakistan treat their non-muslims pretty damn good i think. it only started to go wrong when the whole 911 thing happened and the invasions etc.

Of course it it. However, refusing to put up signs publicizing the Olympics is an odd place to take a stand, too. It seems likely there's more to it. The headline takes the claim of an exile group, the World Uygher Congress, at face value; the story gives a little more detail:

"China is forcing mosques in East Turkistan to publicize the Beijing Olympics to get the Uighur people to support the Games (but) this has been resisted by the Uighurs," World Uyghur Congress spokesman Dilxat Raxit said in an emailed statement.

Beijing says al Qaeda is working with militants in Xinjiang to use terror to establish an independent state called East Turkistan.

Oil-rich Xinjiang is home to 8 million Turkic-speaking Uighurs, many of whom resent the growing economic and cultural influence of the Han Chinese.

Sorry but as a communist myself this sort of thing is against communism. We believe in freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. The fact that China is so involved in religion in this manner by banning certain beliefs breaks that belief in communism. This is nothing more than imperialist patriarchy. we talk as if we suddenly know that there are oppression in china, nothing new, and i guess what's hidden is a lot more, not only for muslims but i think for all religions- a communist system, and this what these kind of systems used to do.

the question is how to convince them not to practice these things? certainly not by force, china is not iraq or afghanistan, a weak countries that the biggest army in the world happy to invade it without much losses.

by bycotting the olympiads? i think these will not do much.

the only way i think is by soft pressure and the people of ughur provide grantees that they don't make for separation from china, in the same time they benefit from the industrial advances in progress.
