Yesterday was the prophet's birthday (Mawlid an-Nabi). In Egypt (I don't know about the other countries), you can see the celebration of this day by movies about the prophet's life on TV (the same movies broadcast every year
), special radio programmes about him with some love songs and chants and not to forget the most important thing; the prophet birthday's candies. Such candies were introduced to the Egyptians by the Fatimids during their rule. And of course the Friday sermon is going to be about the Prophet. What are you thoughts? Do the people where you live celebrate this day? How? And How do you see such practices? How do you view the idea of celebrating the prophet's birthday in the first place? |

Here in Malaysia they do celebrate it and they prepare for it since long before it. It's also a public holiday by the way.
In Saudi Arabia, where i used to live, they don't celebrate it because the scholars there say that Prophet Mohammed warned us from praising him like what christians did with Jesus. They also say that remembring our prophet should be everyday, through following his sunnah. I don't have a specific opinion about this practice of celebration because to me, it depends in how far people go with it. |

the quran tells us to make no difference between the prophets, so if we choose to celebrate muhammad's birthday, should we then celebrate all prophets birthdays? since we do not know all 124,000 prophets or their birthdays, should we have a birthday party everyday and study the teachings of different prophets everyday in honor of their contribution to teaching the path of God?
no one here celebrates it as far as i know, but i live in the middle of bibleville haha and i do not know any muslims in my area. just last week i had someone rudely interrupt me at work and ask me if i had accepted jesus as my lord and saviour and as the son of God. i would have loved to have a theological discussion, but i was at work so i had to chase him off. peace |

assalamualaykum all:
the prophet (saw) forbade us from celeberating birthdays probably because it's not day of happiness rather of sorrow because you are nearer to your death. the prophet(saw) was a nabi for around 23 years never did he celeberate his own birthday nor did his companions, so who are we to celeberate it. this celeberation is known as biddah(innovation) which is a major sin. may allah(swt) save us from this ameen. |

if a person or a group wish to celeberate the prophets birthday they must bring proof that the prophet allowed us to celeberate his birthday

It's an innovation of course to immitate other religions. My point is, in some countries, they use this day just to remind people about the sunnah of prophet Mohammed, etc. But of course, it's not allowed for us to do prophet Mohammed forbid us to do. Baraka Allah feekom.
