In the case of the French Marxist philosopher Roger Garaudy, who was born in 1914 and converted in 1982 when he was 68 years old, the key factors were arguably his conviction that Western society is based on a false understanding of man, and his own life-long quest for transcendence. That is the view which will be taken in the present paper. Nevertheless, other factors undoubtedly played a part. Some of them will be reviewed briefly by way of introduction.

During World War II, Garaudy was imprisoned in Djelfa, Algeria, as a prisoner of war of Vichy France; he was a member of the French Communist Party who tried to reconcile Marxism with Roman Catholicism in the 1970s, and then abandoned both doctrines in favour of Sunni Islam when he became Muslim in 1982, taking his new name, Ragaa. He currently lives in Spain.

In May 1997, Garaudy was commissioned to write a series of articles for an Arabic weekly published in London by the BBC Arabic Service. In 1998, a French court found him guilty of Holocaust denial and racial defamation, fining him FF 120,000 ($40,000) for his 1995 book Mythes fondateurs de la politique israélienne (Founding Myths of Israeli Politics). Endorsing the views of French Holocaust denier Robert Faurisson, the book declared that during the Holocaust, Jews were not killed in gas chambers. [1] The book was quickly translated into Arabic and Persian, and a Sudanese lawyer, Faruk M. Abu Eissa, assembled a five-man legal team to support Garaudy at his trial in Paris. The Iranian government paid some of Garaudy's fine.
In 2002 Garaudy received the "Al-Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights" from Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi.

You don't find it troubling that a rabid Communist "fruit loop" found Islam a suitable bedfellow for his outlandish political ideals? If I were a Muslim, I wouldn't be drawing attention to this fellow.

I'd like to think he gained some sense when he converted to Islam, but that's sadly not the case. Any particular reason you called attention to him, maro?

I was looking through the book, Mythes fondateurs de la politique israélienne, and I had a hard time finding the anti Semitic part… would you be kind enough to highlight the part where he denies that Jews were killed by Nazis…?

i wonder why denying the holocaust is considered a tremendous guilt , while denying God and his prophets is simply "personal freedom" ?! we haven't seen both, huh ?

by converting to Islam , he abandoned communism as Islam is not in harmony with it .

There's a little more concrete proof of the horrors of the Holocaust than of G-d.

To deny something like the Holocaust makes you look like a nutcase. I can't say I'm proud to have such people in the ummah.
