Adam, the first man built the first masjid. The masjid he built is what is now masjid-al haram, or the kaaba. Actually he built the foundations that the building was later expounded upon.

That first House of God was later rebuilt in Makkah by Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him
Within Islam, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him built the first masjid in a place outside Madinah called Qiba'. This was during his migration from Makkah to Madinah

FM. I know that Muslims believed that Muslims believed in the concept of Islam existing at Adam's time (or that of Abraham's time or other before Muhammad's time); I am agnostic, so I considered something like this as being largely unfounded and without basis of fact....not that I believe in Adam to be real in any case. I considered that Islam as a religion as existed in Muhammad's time, and not before.I would like something more realistic answer, like mosque either being built in Muhammad's time or after him. If you believe in this about Adam building the mosque then you are entitled to such belief, but I want something with far more foundation than simply your belief. Quote:

Does this still exist?

The masjid of Qibaa' is a few miles outside Madinah, and yes it does still exist and is rebuilt and expanded
Prophet Muhammad used to go there every Saturday morning and Muslims visiting Madinah are also encouraged to go there for prayers This quote is from IOL: Visiting the Qibaa' Mosque This mosque was built when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approached Madinah in his migration from Makkah. The Prophet used to go to the mosque of Qibaa' every Saturday and pray in it (Al-Bukhari). He promised a special reward for praying in it: Whoever cleans himself in his house and goes to the Qibaa' Mosque and prays in it a prayer will be given the reward of performing `Umrah. http://www.islamonline.net/English/h.../1427/07.shtml

You don't have to be sorry, just be more specific. You asked about the very first masjid. You didn't say the first masjid built by Muhammad. So go figure I didn't answer a question you didn't necessarily make clear.

I believe that he thought those mosques built by Adam "for instance" don't exist anymore. In fact, they still really exist till this day.

Quote:
It is common for mythology as well as religion to say that some cities or towns were built by mythological or legendary characters or another. You can such things in mythology by the Sumerians, Babylonians, Greeks, Celts, etc. The foundation of Troy (Ilium) was said to be built by Ilus and Rome was said to built by Romulus. People don't often know when or who build some of the older cities, but they invent myth or legend to explain who and how it was built. That's why I don't put much merit about Adam or Abraham.
