If you could concentrate the teachings of Islam into three sentences (Golden Rule-style), what would they be?

Not easy, but will give it a try:

- Believe in the One and Only God, Creator and Sustainer of the universe and thank Him in your prayers

- Do good deeds in this world for a happy life here and in the Hereafter, especially take good care of your parents, family and neighbours

- Purify your soul to become a better person, and love your Creator as He loves you

I would say

1) Belief in one Allah
2) Taking resposibility for oneself and others i.e the rich take care of the poor, the young take care of the old.....
3) Want for your bro/sis that which you want for yourself

Hi Halcyon, i guess i'll go for ...

1- Believeing in one God and his prophet Mohammed and all other pervious revelations and prophets.

2- Submission to God and believe in what he order us to do and leave what he had prohibited.

3- Humbleness in order to accept the law of God and to not be arrogant from accepting it whatever it's which will lead also to love and deep faith.

oooh oooh, can I try? (I teach a workshop on world religions so I'm always interested in distilling the essence of different faiths.)

1) There is only one God, creator of all.
2) The Qur'an is the holy word of God, given thru Mohammed.
3) It is the role of creation to do as God intended (submission) and humans can do that by following the Qur'an.


I didn't include the Golden Rule because I think that's shared by most all the world religions. It's not what makes Islam unique. (I would not have included the Golden Rule in a distillation of Christianity either.)

There is only one God worthy of worship and it is Allah, the Creator, Sustainer, and Originator of the Universe whose Knowledge encompasses all of His creation, and Muhammed is His last and Final Messenger who like the one before him taught the people to worship one God and submit to His commands fearing the Punishment seeking the Pleasure.
