Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:
"One prayer in my Mosque (in Madinah) is better than one thousand prayers in any other mosque except Al-Masjid-AI-Haram (in Makkah)." (Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari)

It is authentically reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra ) that the Prophet (saas ) said: "Allah (swt ), Most Blessed, Most High, says: "The son of Adam wrongs Me: He curses time, though I am time: In My Hands are all things and I cause the night to follow the day." In another narration, He (saas ) says: "Do not curse time, for verily, time is Allah (swt )."

Quote:
Is there a reason why a prayer in a mosque is any better than one said at home?

Welcome Paul, and thank you for your question
God accepts prayers anywhere, but in Islam some places are more special than others, and also some months are more special than others, like the month of Ramadan for example Mosques are God's Houses on earth, and going to a mosque for prayer is encouraged in Islam and has a special reward. It's encouraged in order to meet other members of the community, neighbours, ... etc. Praying in congregation in Islam on Friday and five times a day, when possible, is one of the means for creating social cohesion among believers. In addition to our individual relation with God, Islam is all about being in a community, caring for others and helping those in need. The mosque is an important place for Muslims to meet and relate with others Praying in a mosque is also encouraged because it's a place for learning. Gaining knowledge is very important in Islam in order to get closer to God and to follow the Straight Path ... As for prayers said at home they are also encouraged in Islam in all "extra" prayers, which we call (Sunnah) prayers. Praying late at night for example and before dawn is encouraged to be done at home where no one else is watching. In general terms, obligatory prayers (i.e. the 5 daily prayers) are encouraged in congregation, while extra Sunnah prayers are better performed at home

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:
"All my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse." They said, "O Allah's Apostle! Who will refuse?" He said, "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it) (Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari)
