Greetings to All:
If of interest, this site, Islamic Philosophy On-Line, is "dedicated to the study of the philosophical output of the Muslim World". The site "contains hundreds of full-length books and articles on Islamic philosophy, ranging from the classical texts in the canon of Islamic philosophy to modern works of Muslim philosophy." http://www.muslimphilosophy.com/ All the best. |

Thanks Cordoba!
How many of us in the West recognize the crucial role that Islamic philosophers played in preserving the thoughts of Plato and Aristotle? And how many of us recognize the influence of Islamic philosophers such as Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Ibn Rushd (Averroes) on Western thought? Personally, I am a big admirer of Syed Hossein Nasr, particularly his writings on the relationship between science and religion.

Ibn Rushd (Averros), 1126-1198 CE, is one of the leading Muslim scholars and philosophers from Andalusia who played a crucial role in translating and guarding the works of Aristotle in the Middle Ages. Ibn Rushd added to his writings on Islam, Medicine and Philosophy a number of books on politics. He wrote commentaries on almost all of Aristotle's work except for Aristotle's "Politics", to which he did not have access. He summarized "Plato's Republic", and wrote about political reform, comparing earlier writings of Greek philosophers with the teachings of Islam. This is a full collection of articles on Ibn Rushd, if of interest. http://www.muslimphilosophy.com/ir/default.htm He had a busy life as judge, beginning at Seville and continuing at Cordoba, and was appointed as the chief qadi (judge) of Cordoba, which is one of the key posts in the government. An amazing personality! All the best. |
