Question about Koran 4:79

Is the ayat saying that God only creates good? Islam does not hold that God also creates evil?

Nothing happens without the will and knowledge of God. That verse is related with the one prior to it where the pagans used to blame Muhammed for anything bad that used to come to them.

So Allah states that any good which comes to you (the people) is from Allah (ie. a reward) any evil that comes to you is from yourselves (ie. a result of ones errors).

.......But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allah "; and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allah ."......

good question.. This verse is related to the verses before. Sometimes verses go with the verses before or after it.

God says in the ayat before it :

4:78 Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allah "; and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allah." So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement?

In this verse Allah is talking about the hypocrites (people of farao in the time of moses)when something good happend in their lives , (fertile years and provision of fruits, produce, children),they would say this is because we follow your religion.
But if something bad happend they would ascribe it to evil omens connected with Musa and those with him.

So after it Allah mentions in verse 4:79

What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness.


Here Allah is talking to those people who act in the way that the hypocrites did in (7:78) He says to them that all blessings in their life is from Allah but that all evil in their life is because of their acts (sins/evil actions).

I hope this explains it. As muslims we believe that everything happens with the decision and decree of Allah. because Allah mentions in the Quran : ' qul kullun min 'indi Laah' ( Say All things are from Allah and this means like I've mentioned before everything occurs by the decision and decree of Allah, and His decision shall come to pass for both the righteous and those who aren't.

I was wondering though if Muslims believe God also creates evil, in a more broad sense? Like is Islam dualistic or non-dualistic?

The very first statement of my previous post answers this, I knew you were going to ask about it that's why I mentioned it:

Nothing happens without the will and knowledge of God.

All good and evil, hidden and apparent happens because God wills it to happen. Satan, unlike in Christian belief, is a servant of God, he chose to be disobedient and on the day of judgement, like all disbelieving creatures, he will be sent to hell instead of Paradise. He doesn't rule over hell, nor over anything else.
