Default Is it inevitable?

Is it inevitable that mankind will destroy himself with the weapons of today? How much more will the technology of destruction advance before someone loses control? Do we protect ours by being able to kick their butts? Where does it end?

Unfortunately, I think it's possible. A nuclear holocaust isn't all that unlikely, in my opinion. We came so frighteningly close during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

But, I don't think it's inevitable. I also think it's likely some humans would survive, and rebuild.

Still, it's a pretty scary thing to think about!

Why would Christian doctrine describe the end of the world in much of the same terms as the proposed description accounting for the end of the dinosaurs? Certainly it was the end for dinosaurs but not for man.

We already have the capability to support 1,000 people on 1 acre of land (according to my calculations) and that capability exponentiates if we reduce the size of a person thru genetics and/or diet.

Can you imagine the antics of a perennial 12 year old in a zero-gravity environment?

GOOD SUBJECT! Perhaps you have been reading Revelations in the Bible! I don't think all the pyrotecknics in Revelations is too important to Christians. They seem to me to be quite willing to adapt their Millenialist (and allarmist) views to the nuclear missile age! It is, after all, the principle that is involved. According to their obsolete old scriptures, there has to be a huge battle called Armageddon. When that is over, it is the End Times and Christ is then supposed to be free to come back and pay us all visit. He is then supposed to bring peace/heaven/God's Kindom or something else that is supposed to be very good and which all born-again Christians are dedicated to want.

As you can see, i treat this belief with some disrespect because it is the one doctrine which could end up with the extermination of us all! Only the "inerrant-word-of-God" bunch are really millenialists, but they already have someone in the White House! So, I wonder: "is that guy willing to have us all killed on the dumb faith it would end us up in "God's Kingdom?" Is he perfectly willing to use nuclear tipped bunker busters on Iran so he can later step up to real nuclear missiles in his war on the other religions? Is he willing to kill us all to "save" us?

What we need is to be saved from them!

Interesting! You really do want to pack us in, don't you! Seems to me we are already so crowded here on Earth would should be forcefully building space colonies and finding room out in our solar system to climatize into satellite Earths for us! We have immense environmental problems with just this many people; what would those problems be if we had to feed ithat many more people on single acres of land?

You are thinking of subsistence farming. Subsistence farmers can grow a lot of food on a single acre by using one plant to shade another and yet another to provide nitrogen to a third and so on. So, is that what we should do? It means grubbing for food as we would not have the fuel to feed the Subsistence system that now enables just a few people to grow a really lot of food. if everyone has to farm to feed themselves on their little tract of land, then there is no one left to build cars, factories and, in other words, civilization.

revelation was also a mans attempt to perceive images through a state of revelation. Get a greek philosopher to describe a space shuttle? Christians use this inability to perceive things beyond their mindframe to account for some of the more radical symbols of revelation.

Quote:
October 1985 To the Peoples of the World:

The Great Peace towards which people of good will throughout the centuries have inclined their hearts, of which seers and poets for countless generations have expressed their vision, and for which from age to age the sacred scriptures of mankind have constantly held the promise, is now at long last within the reach of the nations. For the first time in history it is possible for everyone to view the entire planet, with all its myriad diversified peoples, in one perspective. World peace is not only possible but inevitable. It is the next stage in the evolution of this planet--in the words of one great thinker, "the planetization of mankind".

Whether peace is to be reached only after unimaginable horrors precipitated by humanity's stubborn clinging to old patterns of behaviour, or is to be embraced now by an act of consultative will, is the choice before all who inhabit the earth. At this critical juncture when the intractable problems confronting nations have been fused into one common concern for the whole world, failure to stem the tide of conflict and disorder would be unconscionably irresponsible.

The end will come live here and now focus on God and let today come when it will.

I wouldn't assume the "end of the world" is in store. There's this part of Christian doctrine to consider as well:

Quote:
Mark 13:19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

Mark 13:20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.

Um, it must be I am using a different (and perhaps now archaic) definition of "millenialist." It's possible.

Somehow, I'm reminded of that Genesis music video with the Reagan puppet in it. Hm...and I'm reminded of James Watt.
