Default UN Human Rights Council: a bias entity

from the Jerusalem post:

UN Human Rights Council slams Israel for 7th time

The UN Human Rights Council passed a seventh resolution criticizing Israel on Friday, this time for it's failure to act on earlier recommendations that it end military operations in the Palestinian territories and allow a fact-finding mission to the region.

The rights body, which has only condemned the Israeli government in its seven-month existence, noted with regret its July resolution urging the release of all arrested Palestinian ministers had not yet been carried out.
"Violations of the fundamental rights of the Palestinians continue unabated," said Pakistani diplomat Tehmina Janjua on behalf of the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference, which proposed the resolution. "The Palestinian ministers, officials and civilians have not been set free."
<snip>

Israel's ambassador to the global body in Geneva criticized the council for ignoring a Nov. 26 cease-fire agreement that ended five months of fierce fighting in Gaza.

"Why does this resolution fail to make any mention of the cease-fire between Israelis and Palestinians, that persists despite the continuation of Kassam rockets fired on Israel?" Itzhak Levanon asked the council.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the watchdog last month to deal with the Mideast conflict in an impartial manner, and said it was time to focus attention on "graver" crises such as Darfur.
Despite his plea, the council has passed only a watered-down resolution on the western Sudanese region proposed by African countries, which urged all parties to the conflict to end human rights violations.

This is a bunch of bias crap. While I am not saying that we shouldn't investigate such human rights violations by Israel's governement, this body has done nothing but slam Israel since it was created, ignoring not only human rights violations by Hezbullah and the ruling part of the PA, Hamas, but far worse incidents of human rights violations around the world that should be more pressing for an international group charged with dealing with crimes against humanity.

from the Human Rights Watch:
(Geneva, September 18, 2006) – The new U.N. Human Rights Council must take urgent action to address crises from Darfur to Sri Lanka and expand its focus beyond the Middle East, Human Rights Watch said today.

The council begins its second regular session today. Thus far the council has held one opening session to establish its framework and two special sessions, one on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and one on Lebanon.

“It’s time for the Human Rights Council to get down to work,” said Peggy Hicks, global advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. “Victims of human rights violations from Darfur to Sri Lanka are looking to the council to take immediate steps for their protection.”

<snip>

In its meetings to date, the council has adopted three resolutions on human rights abuses and violations of humanitarian law by Israel, but has ignored the responsibilities and roles of other parties in the Middle East, including Hezbollah and Palestinian armed groups, who have committed violations. In taking a one-sided approach, the council failed in its duty to act to protect the rights of all citizens in the region.
<snip>
Human Rights Watch also urged the council to:

  • Call on all U.N. member states to allow visits by the council’s independent experts, and specifically identify those states which continue to block such visits, including Iran, Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan; and,
  • In view of the council decision in June to extend the mandates of all independent experts for a year, resist pressure to end the mandates of the experts monitoring the human rights situations in particular countries, including Belarus and Cuba.

“If the Human Rights Council fails again to address human rights crises beyond those involving Israel, its credibility may be damaged beyond repair,” Hicks said.

what good is a UN Human Rights Council when it is obviously working on a completely one-sided and bias agenda?

Maybe they could rename it the UN Human Rights Council for Israel. I wouldn't say for a second that Israel doesn't deserve to be condemned, but I also think that concentrating on Israel alone defeats the purpose of UN council. It's kinda bullying.
