Let's suppose it is true that Bush threatenned Pakistan after 9/11. I'm no fan of Bush, but I have very mixed feelings about doing something like that. If it were absolutely necessary to bring out the stick to get Pakistan's support after 9/11, then I am reluctantly for having done so. But I wonder whether it was absolutely necessary? Were there better ways to get Pakistan's support? Was this just some more of Bush's Cowboy Diplomancy, his tendency to use force when force is not needed and perhaps counter productive?

I imagine the trouble with gaining an ally through threats is that the ally is never really committed to you.

I believe CIA has been using the same threat to many head of nation all the time, but indirectly so that no one can complain about that. This is the first time, a head of a nation who is supposed to be US ally came up with the 'facts' of the day. Pretty neat.
