bearing in mind there is no original founder of this faith , do you believe that this strenghenths Hinduism, or weakens it?
....Therefore is it just an interpratation of the culture in which it grew up in or a truth so long forgotten that it doesnt matter? (be warned....I have a 4000 word essay on this subject ) |

Which is more worthy of admiration: Manu or Man U?

Sorry, DP, I was playing with you a bit.
![]() Yajnavalkya's asked this question six or seven times in succession and keeps answering with decreasing numbers. I always found this passage an interesting take on this most remarked upon aspect of Hinduism. |

Neither Manu nor Man U, it is cricket which is important. And the Gods are Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble, Kapil Dev, etc.

Many mountains are believed to be the abodes of Shiva. Each region had its own. Mt. Kailash in Tibet, Adi Kailas in Uttarakhand (Beyond Badrinath), Haramukh overlooking Srinagar in Kashmir, Kinner Kailash in the Baspa Valley and Mani Mahesh in Bharmour Valley in Himachal Pradesh, Neelkantha in the background of Badrinath temple, Shivling in the Gangotri Glacier, Mt. Kedar in the background of Kedarnath temple. Actually all high mountains in Himalayas or anywhere else are either associated with Shiva or with Shakti.
Hindus were never a monolith. There always were many philosophies and many practices. What would you expect of a people constituted of scores of tribes, the aboriginals, the Dravidians, the Aryans, the Scythians, the Huns, the Kushanas, the Parthians, the Greeks. They could only live by accepting position of others or by killing each other. Fortunately, the Indians did the latter. Yajnavalkya is one of the most revered sages of India and the verses in which he counts the reducing number of Gods is certainly very important. At one time hindus worshiped 33 Gods: Vasus (8), Adityas (12), Rudras (11), and Ashwins (2). Please note Indra is an Aditya (son of Aditi). At one time when the Aryans lived in the Arctic region, they worshiped only seven adityas and the eighth, Martand, was supposed to be born unformed. But these numbers and particular Gods have kept changing all through the history. Finally hindus reduced the number to one and then removed him also by believing (at least some do) that there is no God, all things in the universe are constituted out of Brahman, the universal substrate ('Sarve Khalvidam Brahma' - All things here are Brahman; 'Eko Sad, Dwiteeyo Nasti' - What exists is one, there is no second). |

Th most important thing in hinduism is 'dharma' which is translated as duty and righteous action. It is more important than Gods. There is a story of how a virtous women changed the three great Gods of hinduism, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, into breast suckling infants; of how a brahmin was sent to a butcher, Dharmavyadha, to learn 'dharma'. Following your 'dharma' is the basic requirement of Hinduism. The rest is upto you.
