Default Krishna : 'Zorba the Buddha'

Krishna,if you view his life in general, is a far cry from the other prophets like Buddha, Mahavira, Muhammad ,Jesus, Moses who lived an austere life of self-denial.

The charecterestic of Krishna's life is his many-sidedness. He was great as a musician, as a scholar,as a yogi, as a dancer, as a poet, as a soldier, as an administrator, as a philosopher and spiritual master, and as a gentleman.

Krishna , through out his life was known for his cheerfulness and his funloving nature and mischief . He stole the butter and ghee of the gopis, teased them and flirted with them, stole their clothes while they were bathing, sang songs in the moonlight(which he loved) and danced with them. He was also known for his sense of humour and cracked jokes spontaneously.

Can you imagine the Buddha dancing gaily with young women, or Jesus playing a flute or Muhammad singing songs in praise of nature and life or Moses cracking jokes?

And even though Krishna's life was a tragedy, he always faced life with non-attachment and equanimity, and a perpetual cheerful smile in his face to the very end.

As Osho says in his classic "Krishna :The man and his philosophy", Krishna represents a new order of humanity; Krishna combined in himself the spiritual charecterestics of Buddha, and the materialistic charecterestics of Zorba the Greek. He was himself steeped in non-attachment,yoga, equanimity of mind, spirituality and at the same time he enjoyed life to the maximum. He was in short Zorba the Buddha.

Krishna was the personification of his teaching,"The wise man is he who is intensely peaceful in the midst of intense action, and intensely active in the midst of intense peace."

Sri Dutta Gurumali, an Indian spiritual master, has stated that Kriishna was the greatest yogi the world has ever known, and the greatest bhogi(enjoyer of life) too that the world has ever known, in the last 5000 years.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an Indian enlightened master, and who is the creator of the Art of Living Foundation , bases his institutions philosophy on this trait of Krishna, and has stated "God loves fun."

We all don't need to be staunch followers of Krishna, but let us assimilate this beautiful trait of Krishna, namely 'Zorba the Buddha.'

Niranjan -

Can you please let us know what definition you are using for the word Buddha in your statement? Any of the definitions I know for that word don't fit your usage here. Can you explain, please?

I know that my own brush with Sri Krsna has certainly left an everlasting mark on me. The main thing I took away was the ecstatic unbounded joy and downright relishing of earthly activity. I'd say he was and remains a glowing example to us all of what we can be if we only let our own inner light and joy radiate outwards into our terribly serious and sad little world. What most do not understand is that suffering is the absence of joy and joy, quite simply, is the natural state of the human animal's consciousness. Failure to understand this simple truth is what results in sorrow and all its ancillary hand maidens. Once folks learn to release their own light and joy, their personal torment will subside, slowly at first, but more so with each passing day. Their penchant for tormenting others will also begin to evaporate because they cause pain to make their own pain feel less lonely.

Oh well, I could be wrong, but that is the way it seems to me. Krsna rocks!

I agree that Krishna is a fabulous teacher, and the Bhagava Gita has to be one of my most favoured texts, if not THE most. To praise Him and celebrate His teaching is wonderful.
But I do not see the necessity of implying that Krishna is somehow better/superior as a teacher than Buddha, Christ or Mohammed.
To some people the Buddha is the most wonderful, and to those i share their delight in the teaching. To others its Christ, and I am happy to share their delight, to yet others it is Mohammed or Ram or Shiva, or Guru Nanak and I share the delight equally with all.

There are many paths to Realisation. Celebrate and enjoy your path, yes, but respect the fact that other people feel just as strongly about their path as you do, and with the same justification. Lets not reduce spirituality to a competition as to who's avatar is greatest.

I agree with you. The true nature of the soul is peace, love and joy. When we live in the consciousness of our true nature - we will find true happiness from within. When we realize the true self, we see that the absolute truth is the same in others as well. We realize that we are all no different.

Radha and Krishna are said to be the guardians of those in love. I was going to custom design my own wedding cards but instead my dad bought some for me. I was going to include this picture on my card...it's so beautiful:

Smile Nice topic, now we talking.

Hahahahahahahaha.....(estatic laughter) this is very good............hello hema!, i'm not here on this forum to convert others towards shri-krsna( bhakti) or to argue who's avatara is better, hema understands this, but michaelm does not, the fact remains is that within lord krsna is contain all things good in man and he manifested this in his earthly life a way for us to follow and break free of samsara.

Im glad about that. dare I push the point and ask if you agree that the same can be achieved by following Christ, Buddha, Shiva, Rama and others?

The many names of God!

In the end, all of it, including Krishna, is an illusion. We are God. There is nothing else.

Personally, I do in fact put Krsna at the head of the pack, as it were. In light of Oneness, in many ways we are all the same person. Krsna embodies all of what we are. However, the same can be said to an extent of ALL avatars. Again, personally, I only recognize Krsna, Rama, Buddha and the Christ as Avatars to the fullest degree, but there are grades in avatars and to ignore this is to miss the point of multidimensional personality. In some respects, Buddha WAS Krsna following a specific path, exhibiting specific traits, as was the Christ and Rama.

I could simply be showing my prejudice, but I simply do not extend this to other mortals, save for one who is soon to be, who will herald a new era and in essence, abolish ignorance on a global scale.

Oh well, what would I know, lol. I never claim to be right, but it is a pretty idea.

I think we all have our 'favourites' and there is probably a spiritual benefit in that. Dig one well deeply and find water rather than dozens of shallow wells all over the place and die of thirst.

In the end, although each one teaches in a different way, the ideas are similar and the methods are meditation, self-less service, devotion. They are just telling us in different ways and giving us the motivation to do them.

What is important is not which one you follow, but on how fully you follow the practice. To be totally devoted so your ego reduces will work just as well if that devotion and love is to Christ, Krishna, Buddha, St Francis or to the sick and dying on the streets of Calcutta.
