James Hogg,17th century poet still bleats on about the *Kings Elwand" or *gowden elwand* being renamed *Orions Belt*,this re label having taken place hundreds of earth years prior to his still bemoaning this *change* in polarity(ahem).
I am big on this constellation which I find recreating everywhere, sometimes in the most splendid beauty possible. Anyone know of the old ways of the El Wand. ty in advance, Andy |

Homer, who made but a single allusion in the Iliad to this constellation, followed by a parallel passage in the Odyssey, wrote of "the might of huge Orion," and described the earthly hero as the "Illustrious Orion, the tallest and most beautiful of men, — even than the Aloidae," adjectives all well applied to our stellar figure; Hesiod said:
When strong Orion chases to the deep the Virgin stars (meaning the Pleiades of Taurus); Last edited by Darkwater; 09-26-2008 at 12:24 PM. |

"We next come to the Orion period which roughly speaking extended from 4,000 BC to 2,500 BC, from the time when the vernal equinox was in the asterism of Ardra to the time when it receded to the asterism of Krittikas. This is the most important period in the history of Aryan civilization. A good many 'suktas' in the Rigveda (e.g., that of Vrishakapi, which contains a record of the beginning of the yar where the legend was first conceived) were sung at this time, and several legends were either formed a new or developed from the older ones. The Greeks and the Parsis appear to have left the common home during the latter part of this period as they have retained most of these legends and even attributes of the constellation of Mrigashiras, otherwise called Agrayani, Orion or the Pauryeni. We can now easily understand why no confirmatory evidence is found either in the Rigveda or in the Greek and Parsi legends and traditions. This was pre-eminently the period of the hymns."
So put f'rward the brunt side of yer shin' fur pride in poets is nae sin. *LET THE PEOPLE SING*

Do you know Lord Krishna in describing his attributes (Geeta 10.35), says "Among asterisms, I am the Orion; and among seasons, I am the spring."
Lastly, names of at least three asterisms are derived from a common Aryan root. Agrahayana (Sanskrit) - Ograhayana - Orihayana - Orion (Greek). Shwana (Sanskrit) - Kuon (Greek - dog) Riksha (Sanskrit) - Arktos (Greek Bear) Last edited by Aupmanyav; 11-15-2008 at 07:42 AM. |
