I wish people would stop making absolute statements about religion and atheism. It's possibly the most frustrating thing I experience on these boards. If you're going to say 'religion does this' please specify which religion and if you want to say something about atheism, ie/ 'atheists are all' please specify which and why. It would save a lot of arguments and offensiveness that I experience and what I see other people experiencing. I think everyone would benefit if we all tried to be more conscious of this.
Just thought I'd put that out there ![]()

Religion divides Religion prejudges etc...it doesn't really matter which religion, so long as each of the 1000s of different sects all believe they are right and everyone else is wrong. whereas...atheism, simply being a non belief, or a lack of belief in a paranormal creator cannot be categorized in the same way. In a way it's a silly word...we don't have a word for the non-belief in fairies...yet feel the need to create one for non-belief in unequally unprovable, and capricious entity.

I agree wholeheartedly. Generalizations can render what is trying to be asserted relatively meaningless. Unfortunately, for some it's a habit of speech.

Except in monism.
Except in mysticism. Oh, yes, there's always that one.

Not strictly religions in their own right.
Religion holds us back, prevents free discourse, is responsible for more atrocities from man to man and is a source of irrational behaviour. Yes it is generalizing, but if we are to have a conversation completely without, then it would be a very long one, excluding all the individuals that the generalization doesn't concern. "The Chinese have a very characteristic eye shape"... Try that comment, which is pretty much true, WITHOUT generalizing.

OK, the belief in a supernatural being who takes a personal interest in the doings of individuals.
That IS religion. ![]() Feel better now? ![]() |

I'm not sure if you are joking right now. If you aren't then I should point out that many, many Hindus do not believe in God that 'takes a personal interest in the doings of individual' and neither do Buddhists and many others. So you would be wrong...unless you were joking.
