I'm looking to focus this discussion on the idea that we "cannot own ourselves". Do you think this is true? Why or why not? If not then who can/does "own ourselves" or does no one "own" and it isn't even a matter of ownership? If we can "own ourselves" do we always have that ownership or is it possible to lose it somehow? Are there parts of ourselves that we own and parts that we don't? And any other thoughts you may have are welcome also, but those questions should be anough for starters. ![]()

I'm just renting. I couldn't afford the down payment.

I believe it merely a big pile of manure used to more easily control the naive, desperate, and gullible.

I can see how it is assertable. Some religious philosophy has it that there is no "self", more accurately no self-thing that is separate and distinct from the universe-thing, and that is capable of acting upon it and being acted upon. We are the universe. Our actions are the universe acting, our thoughts are the universe thinking. What we regard as "ourself" is a product of perspective/illusion. The very idea that there is something to "own" other things is bundled up in the same illusion.

I guess it's sort of like when people say they're going to buy some beer, when, in fact, you're only renting it.
