Well, from what I've studied about the spiritual realm and actual interactions by spirits with humans, (note that I'm very much an amateur on the subject) I've "concluded" (for lack of better term, the "conclusion" is uber-duber-super questionable, I know) that, assuming the spirits have similar traits to us, there is a kind of law that denies spirits to interact with our world. Most of the time, when spirits, or at least low-end spirits, interact with this world, it's for malevolent purposes. Now, the spirits can communicate with us, just not physically interact, as that would involve breaking the laws of physics.
Now, for me, gods are just ancient and wise spirits.
