I'd never heard of henotheism. That's probably what my sources meant.
But keep in mind, there's no way for us to know what those ancient people thought as there are very few surviving written accounts, and essentially none that explain the religions at the time.

Guess not. In The Devil: A Biography, the writer says that the pantheon of gods in old polytheistic religions of the middle-east were manifestations of a single entity. I know the Greek gods weren't like that, and I don't know about the Northern European mythologies. I'm only offering a possibility based on some new knowledge.
