Its just physics, the atoms can't collide if there is no contact, "friction."

Let me see if I can dumb it down for you, if you rub 2 sticks on earth long enough, you will notice heat is generated from the 2 sticks, this is friction. Rub the same 2 sticks in space for twice as long as on earth, there will be no heat generated from them, because there is no air in space.

No need to "dumb it down". I'm an engineer and have quite a good understanding of friction and other fundamental principles of physics. In fact, my knowledge of these principles meets a high enough standard that the government saw fit to grant me a licence to perform activities where lives depend on my thorough understanding of things like friction.

BTW - two sticks rubbed together in space would create just as much heat as on Earth. Air may allow you to start a fire with the heat generated, but it doesn't have anything to do with whether heat is produced from friction.

You see, fire begins with heat, that's why its hot, heat comes from fire, and you can only have it if there is air.
