Nevertheless, it is lamented in the prophetical writings that Israel suffered by not killing everyone in the land that they were told to kill. So, in your opinion it could be consistent to be against gay marriage, but accept divorce?

I know the genocide thing is a little extreme, but it's just an example of God telling people to do something, just like He later tells people not to do things like homosexuality.

Not really... I don't think that the Bible is consistent with its message concerning divorce, but it is consistent concerning homosexuality. Both divorce and homosexual activity is frowned upon considerably, but divorce is sometimes allowed under certain circumstances. So if one seeks to live according to the Bible (which I consider to be just a little insane), one must make hard choices where the Bible contradicts itself.

Yes, I think that saying that God is "for genocide" even in the OT is a bit extreme because it associates the ancient context with modern problems. For example, only in modern times can we kill so many people with such effectiveness, whereas in ancient times the real concern was with the fall of small cities. But we can say that God is "for war" in the OT with its atrocities, but they were on a much, much smaller scale and would not be considered genocide.

As far as I know, divorce isn't forbidden in the Bible, but Jesus does forbid remarriage, which is a different matter.

I think the extermination of an entire people can be considered genocide, even if it's done one small city at a time.

In fact, I think a reasonable person might even question the morality of completely destroying one small city here and there, with all the occupants, even in cases that didn't qualify as genocide.
