No, it's not excommunication. They are not following church doctrine. That in effect, makes them not Catholic. You can't pick and choose what you believe and don't believe about the Catholic Church and it's teachings. It's a package deal, all or nothing.

Right. In other words, believe all of this or believe none of it. If you do not believe all of it you're not "cool" like us. This is why people get the idea that the Church teaches belief without thinking.

What if you think that everything else is right about the Catholic Church, except for this one thing, and this thing contradicts something else, so it seems impossible to you to believe it along with everything else? Should you call yourself 99.5% Catholic?

Can you imagine what effect this would have on the demographics of the Catholic Church. I would suspect that at least 99% of those who are listed as belonging to the Catholic faith disagree with some part of Catholic teachings.
