Suppose a friend came to you saying she felt worthless and that life was meaningless to her. Would you recommend she try religion or therapy first? Why?

Therapy. I would feel more sure that therapy would help her compared with religion.
For starters, there are no standard checks made on religious leaders to ensure they do not prey on those in an emotionally vulnerable situation. Therefore, unless I knew somebody on a personal basis, I would have no way of being sure that they would have the qualities and knowledge necessary to look after my friend properly.

Since she sounds almost suicidal, you would be negligent NOT to get her to counseling ASAP.

Why not both?

Therapy. I suppose it will have something to do with identifying the medical establishment as an authority. Lack of self-worth sounds like depression, I suspect that people trained in dealing with illness are best disposed to help.

Everyone needs God if they are depressed or not. Some people need therapy, if they know God or not.
