I think that if that post was an attack, it was a very veiled one because I certainly did see it that way. I think it is quite good that the LDS are able to discuss openly with diverse faiths, but the phenomena that Fish Hunter describes is an interesting one.

Theology wise, I relate more to almost any Christian denomination than to any non-Christian religion. As far as friendships go, religion is not a show stopper.

I think the thing when it comes to other Christians is that it is easier to get into very technical debate which is the kind that tends to get more heated. People get more offended about people debating specific aspects at the core of their belief than they do about people who make the sweeping generalisations that opposing religions are more likely to make. It is more uncomfortable, and therefore less easy to leave it in the debate and have an otherwise friendly relationship.

I try my best to ensure that doesn't get in the way of me seeing the person behind the post, but it is not easy if the majority of contact with that person is in the context of debate. It's one of the additional difficulties of the internet I think.

But you have to understand the position of the historical Christian. The LDS Church is telling us that Christians have been apostate for 1800 years. I'm not sure that falls within a technical issue.

And the Protestants called the Catholic Church apostate. There are still "Christians" today (and I use the term loosely) who call the Catholic Church the "Great Whore." And you guys killed each other in massive numbers. And then the Protestants splintered into a hundred different fragments, all certain that each one had the truth and that the others were dead wrong and going to hell, and killed each other...
