The NIV is a new tranlation of the Holy Bible made by hundreds of bible scholars working with Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic texts. When I read the parable that was the way I thought, but checked this version to see if I were any where on the right track..... I'm not following your thought....But that is what it is all about. Our thoughts are not always going to be the same, and I respect that.
Have a nice day and pick out another parable soon.......I will return and see what answer I can come up with. Keep on Posting Wishing you many Blessings Charity

Hello Charity
Just like you I have read the commentary on all the parables. I have a NIV commentary bible too. The old mustard tree...well it isnt a tree, it is a shrub...hmmm... The point is that the mustard shrub does not grow into a tree, under normal circumstances. The parable is trying to show that whatever the mustard seed grows into, it becomes more than it could ever have been by itself. It should grow into a big shrub, but in the kingdom of god it grows into much more, a tree. Also the mustard seed is you. You come from the smalles seed...a sperm. So if the kingdom of god is in you, then yes you start really SMALL!! And you grow up to be a son of god, which is much more than just a son of man. So the mustard seed grows up to be a tree and not a shrub. God is the one that plants you in this world, by using a MAN, which is why the parable says that a MAN planted a seed.Do you have any idea what the birds are that find shelter in your branches? Heneni In my study NIV Zondervan Publishing Co. Mat 13:32 Page 1458 says The mustard seed is not the smallest seed known today, but it was the smallest seed used by Palestinian farmers and gardeners, and under favorable conditions the plant could reach some ten feet in height, a tree . You said this didn't happen under normal circumstances, God doesn't always work within what we would call normal circumstances, right? Gods ways are not our ways.
That is the only reason I gave this information is I didn't know if you had access to it or not.....
