Myth isn't about fabrication, it's about symbolism. To say "Jesus was a myth" indicates that the role he plays, as a character in a story, has a particular meaning.

I agree, that's what it is, IMO. The Jesus story, although incorporating a version of the much older mytho-poetic theme, was based upon the life of an actual man who lived, here on Earth. Jesus as the fulfilment of a prophectic tradition gives this away, what they're saying-not-saying is that the man thru his life and deeds fulfilled the criteria for the God-man that the old mysteries had established were proof of divinity.
