Jay, it's often used today by those who THINK they know God's will. Do you think that religion had no hand in the justification of our invasion of Iraq? I left my church over this very tenet. America has couched this as a Holy war against "terrorists" who have never invaded our country or planted a single bomb within our borders.
How about stem cell research. Didn't you HEAR that God doesn't want us to do that? The Salem witch trails, Mountain Meadow Massacre and the list could go on FOREVER. Even Hitler justified his atrocities using religion, and if he had won, we might have a different perspective of why the war happened. Those who win, get to write the history and they couch their struggle in a way that shows their "rightness". I believe that this happened with the Israelites. The best way to justify killing EVERYONE (man, woman and child) is to consecrate it as a command of God. So, you want to invade the land of Milk and Honey? Just point out that GOD told you to do it. Who would defy your logic if you have God behind it? While I don't believe that religion has caused any wars, I do see how they are used as a cover up for less than holy agendas. I don't see the "God of Love" acting in such an inconsistent manner.

And, other than the legal differences, what really is the difference between killing and murdering? Even the death penalty end with a murderer being murdered. A hunter murders his prey. A soldier murders his enemy. And in these examples, murder and kill are interchangeable. The taking of life is never justified, save for a kill or be killed situation of self defense/self preservation. And some will say that taking a life in that situation is not even justified.

You realize this is about to open the "Biblical God says don't murder, not don't kill" part of the debate right?
