I don't want to put words in Katz' mouth, and I'm sure she'll be by to offer her opinion, but, yes, I do. They may believe different things about that same Jesus, but they would believe in the same Jesus.

I've changed my mind, i no longer think Mormons are Christians.

From reading this thread and looking through the web, the evidence seems abundantly clear that Mormons are in fact a cult.
A cult of werewolf hobbits, and their Christ is not the biblical Christ because Feathers is their Christ!

Here's another awesome venn diagram by me. As you can see, everything in the Bible is gospel, but not everything that is gospel is the Bible. Or, think of it this way. The Bible can be interpreted in so many different ways, as evidenced by the number of different denominations. They cna't all be right, because often they disagree, yet all are internally consistent with the Bible. God, since he is not the author of confusion, set to rectify that, by revealing another book and restoring prophets, who clear up the issue of which of the many internally consisten interpretations is correct.

I was raised protestant, and I have. In fact, I was raised Lutheran, then become Jehovah's Witness, then Baptist, then Quaker. They ALL had different interpretations of the Bible, because the Bible is not sufficient.

Actually I think we might have a misunderstanding on this whole issue of tradition but that is a topic for another debate, or is it? It seem that the argument here is that only those people who base their idea of Christ on the Bible alone can be called Christian. So the question of Tradition and authority does play a central role in defining Christian in your understanding. A Christian in your understanding, and please correct me if I am wrong, must use the Bible alone for understanding who Christ was and what his teachings where. Any other form of tradition of extra-biblical scriptures invalidates one's Christianity because it becomes tainted by these extra-biblical ideas, correct?

Let me just say that this self-authentication you speak of is a form of tradition, the councils only solidified what the Church already believed (I have a feeling James will agree with me more or less on this regard, maybe not).The authentication of what books should be included as inspired books was based on this self-authenticating principal or the traditions of the early Church. The early Church decided what letters and gospels where authentic and they also knew the proper interpretation of those works, they knew what Paul meant when he wrote a letter because they where there and the letters where addressed to them. They developed a tradition of beliefs based on these things and that was handed down to us today, the Bible being only one of many possible forms that tradition has taken.

But perhaps in the end this question of scripture and tradition should be best left to a separate thread.....maybe I'll start one, anyone else think this is an appropriate topic here or should we take it outside?
