Jesus and the bible teach that after believers die, they go to be with "him." As for nonbelievers: "And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of god with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched'." (Mark 9:47-48). "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. (Revelation 21:8)
Based on these teachings, is it reasonable for someone who believes in the bible, jesus and a christian god to suggest otherwise? How can there be any personal interpretation when the the word of jesus and the bible appear to be very clear on the matter? If the bible is "the written truth" why is there not consensus among followers on the fate of the nonbeliever? Last edited by LogDog; 03-10-2007 at 04:20 PM. |

Wow -
Okay, if you are going to use the literal meaning of the Mark quote - then every perwson in the world should pluck out their eye b/c we all sin. Do you honestly think he is saying that we should pluck out our eyes? No, he is saying that sinning is not of God. The overall message in the Gospels is identical. If the writting was exactly the same, people dispute that the Gospels ofMatthew, Luke and John copied the Gospel of Mark (considered the earliest written). If there are small contradictions, then people dispute and say Jesus was a character made up by the four writers. Every human looks at a situation and views it differently from others because that is what makes us human. For example, if I went to a movie today with me friend and someone was to ask me "Did you go to a movie today?" I might respond "yes I did" and not mention my friend in the response. If my friend was asked the same question he might respond "yeah, I went to a movie w/ lew today." WHy would you think writing would be any different? |

You didn't address his questioning of how two people can take this quote literally - "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur." (Revelation 21:8) - and still have different interpretations? I mean, they could differ in who they classify as "cowardly" or "vile" or "sexually immoral," but the fact that all these people are going to be in the "fiery lake of burning sulfur" would be hard to dispute, taken literally.
