Default culture and advancements in our world clashing with religion.

How big of a topic is this?

How many times does culture effect religion...

Not being true to a religon because of it conflicting with culture.

Or for that matter times have changed so to must religion...with the advancements of the time we lose some of the following of our religion ( whatever religion or belief system you may have?)

Do you see it getting worse?

Think about changes that have taken place in religion...Why did they take place?
Because of culture or an advancement of the times? What is our excuse or reasoning behing this?

I am not sure how to answer that question; I get the impression that this is a chicken and egg question..

Which plays a part in moulding the other ? Does Religion "Mould" culture or is it vise versa ? I believe Religion is the one...

I would have thought people would be keener to stick with the religion, and -if necessary - turn themselves into a sub culture.

It depends on the religion; the fundemental ones do not change (thinking Roman Catholic, Judaism, Islamic)

I can see a movement to "new age" beliefs becoming more popular (of course, New Age beliefs pre-date any others; they are just re-packaged.

The only change I can think of, offhand is when Henry VIII of England decided he wanted to be able to divorce, but, as a Roman Catholic, he couldn't.

So he just divorced England from Rome, quashed ti no divorce rule, and we basically are left with Roman Catholicism with the one exception.

As for the processes that brought about by that change...well, egotism; chuck toys out of the pram syndrome.......

But of course they have changed slight or not. At one time most religions covered their head to some degree catholics did..then changed to I believe a ribbon in their hair...what was the reason for change?

Some changes are very slight to start with.

What about no meat on Fridays for Catholics how often is this practiced as compared to say 30 years ago.

Or how many Muslims covered themselves as compared to now?

I am not putting anyone down for how they chose to act that is not the point of the discussion it is why things have changed.

Abdu'l Baha:

"The prophets say that something else is necessary. It is true that education transforms the desert into a rose garden, the virgin forest into an orchard, saplings into trees, and single flowers into double and treble flowers, but there is a fundamental difference in men. You may know ten children of one country, in the same school, under the same master, treated and fed in the same way. One of these children may make great progress, others may remain stationary. In the innate nature there are differences of memory, perception and intelligence. There is a superior, a middle and an inferior degree which corresponds to the difference in the fundamental estates of creation. While recognizing the influence of education we must also become acquainted with the innate disposition.
The prophets are sent to educate this innate quality in humanity. They are like gardeners who sow the grain which afterward springs up in a thousand forms of advancement. The prophets are therefore the first educators of the world, the head masters of the world. However much man may advance in material civilization, if he remain ignorant of the spiritual civilization, his soul is still defaced.
The prophets are sent to refresh the dead body of the world, to render the dumb, eloquent, to give peace to the troubled, to make illumined the indifferent and to set free from the material world all beings who are its captives. Leave a child to himself and he becomes ill-mannered and thoughtless. He must be shown the path, so that he may become acquainted with the world of the soul - the world of divine gifts."
(Abdu'l-Baha, Divine Philosophy, p. 109)

I think that religion does evolve to accommodate our shifting awareness. Not doing so renders it useless. The rise of fundamentalism is a reaction to this evolution. And boy, is fundamentalism clashing with culture! Creationism vs. Evolution. Homosexualilty being challenged. Harry Potter books being banned.

my religion is practically un touched by modern culture, unlike most pagan religions mine was passed down, necromancer from necromancer, through my master. to me, since ancient greek times. besides, culture would have a difficult time explaining everything about death and what death is.

Personally, I think that things are improving, not getting worse, at least in some areas. Many people today are moving into a more personal relationship with the Divine and moving away from rigid beliefs.

I also see that the far right is desparately clinging to things as the always were. However, I think that in the long run they too will have to move with the times.

"population crisis"
- Gays become more open and a popular idea.
- Family sizes decrease

Religion doesn't really advance it just supports peoples inflated egos and provides a way for a society to survive. People all want someone to pat them on the back for what they do. Prisons themselves could be considered a religion.
Religions serve their purpose and the people that are a part of the religions will eventually change to preserve themselves and their way of life. Change is slow, but it's inevitable.
There will always be those of us that cling to old ways. That's the price we pay for dedication.
