For those who think they speak to God only in prayer they should pray "Father walk with me today and be with me in my decisions. Let my heart be filled with love knowing that I can count you.

I have conversations with God all the time. I hear God is the song of a bird, in the laughter of a friend, in a soft summer breeze, in beautiful music, in the restless sea, in a child's voice and every time I am aware of God's Universe speaking I say thank you.
I also hear God's voice in the still, small voice I call my conscience. It asks me to offer my best self when I might want to be less than gracious. I'm sure there are many times when I miss this voice. I also know that if I do hear it and ignore it, it becomes very loud and insistent.

I talk to God in prayer and God replies to me, often through the liturgy or through reading the Bible, sometimes other things I read. Also God answers by strengthening me in peace, love, patience, courage. As MH said, to hear we have to first listen.
I would not say I've ever had something I'd call a mystical experience, but I have had it happen to me on many occasions, the most recent just couple of nights ago, where I have a very very specific question or problem that is directly answered by the readings of the daily office, or by the Sunday liturgy or sermon. Likewise I've been comforted and fortified in the most astounding ways by Bible readings, so often and so specifically it is difficult to chalk it up to chance.

I personally believe that a two-way conversation with God is very possible. "Conversations With God" by Neale Donald Walsch convinced me of that. But why not many people actually have a conversation is because - while you might absolutely try to convince yourself it is possible, and you believe it is going to happen, still in the back of your mind you doubt it. Somewhere you do not think it possible. Also, you may think you "need" the conversation, but again, instinct tells you otherwise. You can have a two-way conversation with God when you know it has already happened. When you know you do not need to ask, because it has already been answered. But when you know this, you do not have much need for a conversation with God, but however, you can still have one. In the book I mentioned earlier, Neale Donald Walsch wrote an angry letter to the one he believed to be the greatest victimiser - and he got a reply - through automatic writing. (When a spirit takes control of your arm/hand and uses your muscles to write. I haven't looked into that part all that much, but it is apparantly a voluntary "take-over") But through that book(s), most of my questions were answered - and as I honestly believe them to be Neales conversation with God - and so, in that sense God was having a conversation with me. God converses in many different ways and it is up to us whether or not we recognise and listen to the replies
