Do all muslims think this way or was this just an extremist sect of muslims? Kind of like the fire and brimstoners of the Christians. Also another that is bugging the hell out of me. Why can’t people show pictures of Muhammad? I think that it very ridiculous if that is the case. Someone please explain…

No, not all Muslims think that way. It is just extremists. And others, particularly Sister_M, have already spoke beautifully about the images thing.
Bottom line is that it really doesn't matter if we can't understand it. We should still respect it.

I remember hearing about Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam condemning Rushdie. This is the reason why 10,000 Maniacs removed Peace Train from their album. They didn't want to pay any more royalties to him after that, and I don't blame them.
I didn't realize that he had signed a fatwa as opposed to personally speaking the condemnation. But that doesn't mitigate it much in my mind. If the "Godfather" asked me for a favor that went against my conscience, I wouldn't do it. And would be prepared to face the consequences. I assume that God is a higher authority??
As for Rushdie and the Satanic Verses, yes, he knew exactly what he was doing when he wrote them. He was aware of how insulting that would be to Muslims, that it attacked the very foundation of the faith. And he did it anyway because he's an arrogant *******. BUT he's also a brilliant writer. I learned a far less distorted view of Islam from reading that book than I did from watching the news reports about Khomeini and the fatwa. And it made me interested to learn more. PLUS, it doesn't matter how arrogant he is, he did not deserve a death sentence.
