Maybe. It depends what you believe: was His sacrifice intentional and inevitable or not? Did he want to die for the sins of Mankind and just went along with the machinations of the Pharisees, Saducees and others? Or...was He a victim of a plot? Perhaps both? Let me tell you what I think:
The Romans ruled former Israel and the Jews were in despair. The priestly caste of the Pharisees and Saducees were corrupt and in with the oppressors, lining their pockets with coins taken from their own people via heavy taxes and tithes. There were Jews who abhorred this situation and wanted to do something about it: amongst them were the Essenes, a desert-swelling Jewish tribe who practiced asceticism and actively converted Arabs and Gentiles to Judaism via Baptism. The baptist John was one of these Essenes.
The Essenes, being a mystical sect, had connexions with the Zoroastrians, Gnostics and many Pagan cults. They formed together to bind the Old Myth of the Dying and Ressurecting Godman into the prophetic Messiah of Judaism, whom it was believed was due to appear imminently. Now, soem serious suspension of disbelief is required for the next part: a young girl, or virgin, becomes impregnated using ancient highly secret arcane methods by which no male progenitor is required, techniques known only to the most sophisticated mystery cults of the time, and techniques long-lost to us now since the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginnings of the Dark Ages, when much of the knowlege of the Ancient world was destroyed or fell out of use or was surpressed.
The Virgin gives birth to a boy, Yeshua or Jeshua, whom it is agreed is to be the Essene Teacher of Righteousness, an Annointed One who will unite many traditions under Judaism. He is trained as such from around 5 years of age, made to study all the arcane and mystical texts of the religions of his time. As part of his own spiritual journey he heads East in his teens and studies with the Hindus, Buddhists and others, before journeying to the furthest point of the Western World as it was then: Ireland. Returning to Judea around 29 or 30 yrs of age, having attained the necessary wisdom and knowlege of the arts to undertake his Ministry, he is baptised into his role by John in the river Jordan and that's where the Gospel stories pick up the tale. As a charismatic leader of his time, he was executed by the Romans @ the behest of the upper-caste Jews about three years later because his plan would have succeeded.
As it was subsequently, the Essene, Gnostic, Zoroastrian and Pagan religions were after all united into one religion: Christianity.
Was it a setup all along? If so, Jesus knew it. I sometimes think of him as a believer in Determinism: he resolved to submit to God's will manifest in the cosmos and let whatever be. He had a faith, for sure. But then, that's only my opinion.
